The Golden Globes, as Tweeted
The Golden Globes kicked off our 2014 pop culture season, so I kicked off my marketing Twitter party season as well. During these kinds of events, we all jump onto Twitter and comment about the brand marketing, and a whole bunch of other stuff along the way. It's great fun.
The hashtag for The Golden Globes was #GGExp, and here's a recap of what the party was trending on. This also appeared on Huffington Post Entertainment today as well.
Awards season is when the fashion brands shine so from that standpoint, we have to give it up to Ralph Lauren for the red dress on Lupita Nyong'o ... a true stunner. There were also a lot of baby bumps on the red carpet, and no one did it better than Olivia Wilde in Gucci. Best personal brand goes to Diane Keaton because, well, she's always Diane Keaton.
If 2013 was the year of the selfie, then it's roaring into this year as well. Lots of comments on the red carpet, and a common joke in the awards with Julia Lois-Dreyfus pulling off a cute stunt with Tina and Amy. Matthew McConnaughey gets our pick for "most real celeb" for taking selfies with the fans all along the red carpet. Bravo!
Speaking of social media, it was on fire! Shout-outs go to Dunkin' Donuts for best vine video and to DiGiorno Pizza for its continuing quick humor in the moment (the brand nailed it during The Sound of Music live and still has its game on). The most retweeted quote of the night, at least in our crowd, was from Jacqueline Bisset with "forgiveness is the best beauty treatment" (keeping the context in which she said it aside!). And of course the most commented topic was about the seating chart, which seemed to place every winner as far away from the stage as possible.
As far as the advertisers, if The Golden Globes are an early indicator, then we are in for an amazing Super Bowl. Here are three of the favorites from the show ....
Oscar Mayer Carving Board Turkey: the brand's insights on Thanksgiving, turkey, and family were just dead on. Almost everyone can relate, putting their sliced turkey in a relevant space in our hearts.
Chrysler: In an fascinating partnership, Chrysler joined with the Kennedy Family to confront bullying. While some questioned the pairing, I for one applaud the effort. And if the minivan is a symbol of family, then it makes total sense for the brand that is "imported from Detroit."
Bing: Given that The Golden Globes viewing audience is largely women, we also have to salute the brand Bing's salute to brave women. Very inspiring.
And then one final call out, despite that this was really just the television network's self-promotion, you do have to love Jimmy Fallon for "bringing Late Night back to NY." As a born and raised NY-er and a Late Night lover, that just makes me smile.
Oh what a night! Stay tuned for more pop culture Twitter parties ... next up is #GrammyExp on January 26th!
What's your experience? Jim.
PS - No matter what anyone says, I still love Tina and Amy!
