New York Shows Up

Full disclosure: I’m a New Yorker. I grew up in Upstate New York, went to graduate school at Columbia University, and have lived in/around Manhattan for over thirty years now. I’m a New Yorker. So I’m biased about New York and us New Yorkers.

And as a result, there is one thing I know for sure … when there is any kind of a crisis or disaster, New York City shows up. We’ve done it time and time again. From blackouts to foul weather to crime to international terrorism. This current healthcare crisis is no different.

New Yorkers are showing up to help, however they can. This is New York, after all.

I’m so inspired by the every day stories of New Yorkers coming forth and contributing. We hear it every night at 7:00pmET when New Yorkers open their windows and clap for the frontline workers in the crisis.

So inspiring. So New York.

But even New Yorkers you wouldn’t expect to show up are showing up.

Such as what is perhaps the most expensive restaurant in Manhattan: Eleven Madison Park. While the governor has ordered the restaurants closed for incoming customers, this exclusive eatery is opening its doors as a commissary for healthcare workers and other first responders so they don’t have to worry about where they will grab a bite to eat. I bet the food is pretty darn good and they deserve every bite.

And then there’s the Four Seasons Hotel, what is perhaps one of the most expensive hotels in Manhattan. The hotel has also opened its doors for healthcare workers who need a place to stay between shifts.

And the Four Seasons and Eleven Madison Park aren’t the only ones in New York. I just received a note from the CEO of Marriott where that brand is doing exactly the same thing.

And let me just say that this isn’t just happening in New York. It’s happening all over the world. Literally. It’s just that I smile perhaps a little harder when it’s coming from my own home town.

Nothing left to say other than Thank You for thanking them in your own way.

What’s your experience? JIM
