Crayola's "Colors of the World"

I know it may sound trite to talk about Crayons right now, but I’m trying to do my part (the best I can) to raise my voice and spring into action. Helping brands and highlighting brands that can be part of change is one way that I think I can help. Among others.

So here is Crayola with its newest “Colors of the World” edition that features a full range of colors for “flesh.”

Back in the day, there was only one “flesh” color and I’m sure you can image what it’s tone. The brand later changed the name, but it was still used by children all over the world for “flesh.” The problem, we know, is that most don’t have that color for their own flesh. Most people’s skin color isn’t that color.

“Colors of the World” seeks to fix that. Take a look:

Some might say a small step. I say it’s a step … imagine how children can now feel when they can color in a character that reflects their skin tone. Color a character that represents them. I’d want that for my kids.

And if we can get every brand to take some sort of a similar step, then perhaps we can make a bigger leap forward.

Thank you, Crayola. Other brands, what can you do? What’s your experience? JIM
