Milton Glaser "I Love NY"

The world recently lost a giant from the overall design community…Milton Glaser. Founded “New York Magazine,” created rock star posters, and for me most importantly, designed the “I Love NY” logo.

The year was 1977. I was about 14 years old, living in upstate New York, and just starting to think about what I wanted to do when “I grow up.” At a very young age, I somehow knew that I wanted to go into marketing and it’s the “I Love NY” campaign and logo that was partially responsible.

I marveled at the notion that the campaign turned a “state” into a “brand.” I didn’t really use those words in my mind at the time, but that was what captured my attention. And while I didn’t know who Milton Glaser was at the time, I do know that he personally influenced my love of brands, marketing, and creativity.

The logo and campaign literally made me appreciate and understand creativity, probably for the first time, and made me want to be “creative.” It made me want to create advertising campaigns.

So I’d like to give a huge “Thank You” to Milton Glaser. I owe you a lot. Rest in peace.
