Marketing Inspiration from Robert Mitchum

I recently saw an interview with George Clooney where he was talking about being humble and the importance of humility. For someone so successful in his career, it was quite inspirational. In the interview, he quoted legendary actor Robert Mitchum, who said:

“I never learned anything from hearing myself talk”

It got me thinking.

I think this kind of humility and the notion of not just talking about yourself applies to brands too. Especially in how brands behave on social media. Brands should not “hearing myself talk” when it comes to egagement. It’s not about the brand message, it’s about the audience. Talk about the audience. And perhaps how the brand can help the audience. But not about the brand talking about itself.

When it comes to marketing, inspiration can come from unusual places like an actor who was famous in the 1940’s, 50’s, and beyond. Still relevant.

Talk about them, not about yourself!
