Black Barbie 45th Anniversary #BlackHistoryMonth

Source: Mattel

In 1980, brand Barbie released its first Black Barbie, created by Kitty Black Perkins who was the Chief Designer of Fashion Doll Concepts at the time. Up until then, Barbie was many many things, but she had only been one skin color.

To commemorate the 45th Anniversary of Black Barbie, the brand is releasing a new doll in the likeness of its creator. Celebrating its creator!

The story of Black Barbie and Kitty Black Perkins was also documented in 2023 in a fascinating documentary on Netflix, as an important part of Black History.

Hats off to you Ms. Perkins and to Brand Barbie for making sure we represent our culture and also push it forward.
