‘Tis the (Pop Culture) Season #FeelingFriday

We are in the middle of what many call “pop culture” season … we’ve had The Golden Globe Awards, The Grammy’s, and this weekend is The Super Bowl. It’s pop culture on display and for marketers it is gametime. Not just for advertising, but for brand activations, retail promotions, social media activity, influencers doing their influencing, and every other kind of stakeholder engagement.

As a marketer (and a consumer actually) if you are in it, then you are in it.

Here it is the Friday before the Super Bowl and aside from the big game, all of the advertisers are getting souped up for their moment in the sun, along with their brand activations, retail promotions, social media activity, influencer doings, and every other kind of stakeholder engagement including involving their employees however possible.

But as a consumer myself and as a marketer too, here on the Friday before The Super Bowl, I’m finding it hard to find the energy if I am going to be honest. The world is a tough place right now. It’s hard to concentrate, it’s hard to be creative, it’s hard to relish in the moment, and it’s hard to celebrate the victories of these pop culture milestones in the same way that I/we used to celebrate.

So as I’ve tried to wrap my head around those feelings and in some cases those barriers, I’ve decided that I have to change how I feel and how I approach these pop culture moments in the sun. I used to celebrate all of these, but now I need to motivate all of these.

Motivate, not celebrate. Hmmm.

While I used to (almost) sit back and just celebrate the winners and celebrate the work from the marketers (honestly, including my own), I am now going to be motivated by it all. Motivated to do more. Motivated to do something. Motivated to do better.

Motivated to elevate my work, to give it more meaning, to give it purpose for the world in which we live.

The world we now live in demands it of ourselves. We must be motivated by it to live in it, to live for it, and to be better in it. To excel within it and above it.

And that’s how I am going to approach this weekend’s Super Bowl and all the big moments that are coming after it. I’m not sure how else to do it.

How about you?!? What’s your experience? JIM
