Disney+

This is the week that was Disney+ …

It was a big week for Disney with its new streaming service, Disney+. Pent-up demand that drove ten million subscribers in one week. More hype than perhaps even one of its blockbuster movies. So many people trying to subscribe that the system closed down, creating even more hype and demand. Perhaps by design. Frenzy ensued!

Streaming services certainly aren’t new and they aren’t necessarily innovative either, no offense to Disney. But there’s also no reason why a brand can’t take what is already working for another competitor and replicate it for themselves. It’s the entire reason that I write this blog so that we can all learn from each other and apply it to our own work. Disney is simply taking what is working for others and applying to themselves. And it worked to the tune of ten million subscribers in one week!

BTW the timing couldn’t be better. Nostalgia for Star Wars, which BTW is available on Disney+. A thirst for classic movies, which BTW are available on Disney+. Plus a desire to entertain the kids, which BTW comes in overload on Disney+.

On a personal note, I would have KILLED to have this when my kids were young. Endless trips to Blockbuster (remember that brand!?!), loads of cartons of video tapes (remember those stacks!?!), and non-stop comments of “I’m bored” (I remember those comments only too well!). I would have KILLED for this.

And one more BTW, it’s pretty darn smart for Disney to make sure it has a constant presence in every home across America, every single day, starting with ten million. I wonder what they were forecasting for the first week?

What’s your experience? JIM
