Barney's is Closing, Once and for All

I have to be honest…I’m taking this one hard. We’ve seen a lot of retailers go by the wayside, but this one hurts. Barney’s! Barney’s is New York! Barney’s is my place! OMG!

Yes, indeed, Barney’s once again and once and for all announced that it will be closing all of its stores momentarily. Including the flagship Madison Ave store…my store! Ugh. Sure, Sak’s bought them out and there will be Barney’s boutiques within Sak’s but I have no idea what that means. It surely doesn’t mean the Barney’s that I know and love and identify with! Ugh.

I found my style at Barney’s. My style. Cool shirts. Perfect fitting jeans. Messenger bags. I remember when, as an adult, I had to buy a real adult suit…I went to Barney’s. When a friend was getting married and needed a tux, we took him to Barney’s. When we wanted to hunt down a sale, we went to Barney’s…and then had a martini and a snack at the restaurant Fred’s. So New York!

So to commemorate this horrible moment, I’d like to feature one of the original pieces of advertising from Barney’s. Someone at my agency recently reminded me about this, and I almost broke into tears. Ok, I’m being dramatic but anyway, here goes:

Sad. So sad to see retail as we know it all go away. This one from Barney’s is particularly hard. Ugh.
