Netflix Invites Brands to be NSFW

A word of caution bc you may consider this to be NSFW … but for me it’s just marketing which is my work!

I’m honestly not sure that I’ve ever seen this before. Sure, we’ve been starting to see brands comment on each other’s activity which up until recently never happened either. But just take a look at the fast food category and you’ll see Wendy’s on BK on McDonald’s on Popeyes on Chick-fil-A. They’ve all started piling on each other. Great fun to watch, actually.

But in a world that’s continuously becoming more and more sensitive, I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a brand invite other brands to not only jump on their activity but provide sexual innuendos in the process.

WHAT!?!

Yes, Netflix recently sent out a tweet asking other brands to answer this simple question: “What’s something you can say during sex but also when you manage a brand twitter account?”

At first I thought it was a joke. But then as brands started to respond I realized that this is real. And real funny IMHO.

Some of the responsese:

  • Bud Light: Check out our new cans

  • Kraft Mac & Cheese: Can take anywhere from 7 to 10 minutes

  • Air Lingus: We’re dimming the lights for takeoff

  • HGTV: Does the carpet match the drapes?

The list goes on; in fact you can read a lot more of them by clicking here.

Stating the obvious here: this clearly stems from the cultural, shall we say, phenomenon that is “Netflix and chill.” And it’s “interesting” to see Netflix “go there.” For sure.

But I have to say that I’m amazed at how these fairly conservative companies are jumping on the bandwagon, potentially being NSFW and potentially sparking controversy of their own.

But then again, it is good clean fun and it’s awesome to see some brands have a sense of humor!

What’s your experience? JIM
