Helen Reddy - I Am Woman #MusicMonday

We lost a legend last week - Helen Reddy. Her iconic 1971 song “I Am Woman” is one for the record books.

I am old enough to remember hearing that song on the radio as a kid when it was new. It’s interesting to remember back then because I never realized that it was a “feminist” song. I had no idea. i grew up in a family of very strong women. My mother was the boss, hands down. My grandmothers, aunts, etc were all in charge. So as a kid it never occurred to me that women would have to fight for their rights. I know it sounds naive, but I didn’t really “get it” until I went to college and got exposed to a lot more. So it wasn’t until much later that I really understood the message of “I Am Woman.” I thought it was just about anyone being able to do anything that they want to do. Anyone. Well, maybe that is the point.

That is the point. Perhaps breakthrough at the time but now surely needs to be a given. We still have to fight that fight.

And yes, I’m proud to say that my daughter too is a very strong person. Chasing her dreams, pursuing her best interests, and living the life she wants on her terms.

I’m very thankful for that!

We also lost another legend last week too … Mac Davis. RIP
