"Same Old Lang Syne" by Dan Fogelberg #MusicMonday
While this song may not appear on everyone’s playlist of top songs, it does for me right around this time of year. For me, it signals the end of the holiday season … something I look forward to all year long. So it’s a bit sad in that way but it’s also a bit nostalgic because it tells the story of old friends/lovers that have gone their own ways. Two people who once had a lot in common but now sadly don’t anymore.
It reminds me of high school. Perhaps because the song is 40 years old this year and I was in high school at the time it came out. It reminds me of people who I once had a lot in common with, but time and distance and life’s changes have changed that.
Another year gone by filled with changes. Filled with things that perhaps continue to separate us. But at the same time another year of accomplishments and triumphs.
I love the melody set by the piano and I love the melancholy of the sax. But mostly I just love the story telling. Two people who found happiness, just not with each other. Yet they are still able to look back fondly.
It’s on repeat for me all week.
Happy Holidays and Happy New Year! What’s your experience? JIM
