Smile #MusicMonday

I’ve been accused of having the musical taste of a teenager. I’ll take it. I like upbeat optimistic music that reflects either a story or how I’m feeling. Or how I want to be feeling.

Which is why Katy Perry’s new song “Smile” is on my playlist right now. It’s upbeat, it’s optimistic, and it’s how I’m feeling right now.

It’s been a tough year and there have been many times when I’ve forgotten to smile. We still have a long way to go, that’s for sure, but I’m working hard to stay optimistic for the future. I’ve just started an amazing new job (smile), my daughter is getting married in March (smile), my son is visiting us for a few weeks and WFH here (smile), and my husband remains my incredible support system and vice versa (smile). We have to appreciate what we have and smile. Especially when we’ve recently lost our smile.

“Yeah, I'm thankful
Scratch that, baby, I'm grateful
Gotta say it's really been a while
But now I got back that smile (smile)
I'm so thankful
Scratch that, baby, I'm grateful
Now you see me shine from a mile
Finally got back that smile (smile)”

Sure, the lyrics are simple and catchy, but then again this is simple pop music.

“Now I got a smile like Lionel Richie
Big and bright, need shades just to see me
Tryna stay alive just like I'm the Bee Gees
A Mona Lisa masterpiece”

And it’s very Katy Perry. Her brand is incredibly consistent over and over again. You know what you’re going to get and if you’re a fan then you’re not disappointed. Years ago when my kids were teens we went to a Katy Perry concert. Totally on brand. We had a blast. Lots of smiles!
