The Colonial Williamsburg Fifes and Drums #MusicMonday
Last week I went to visit my dad and sister in Colonial Williamsburg. My parents moved there well over twenty years ago and then my sister followed years later. My mom has since passed away, leaving my dad and sister in a colonial style house just steps away from the Colonial Williamsburg site, William and Mary College, and the popular tourist area of shops and restaurants called Merchants Square.
If you’ve never been, Colonial Williamsburg is a throw back in time to when Virginia was first colonized. The Rockefeller family was instrumental in getting the area preserved as a living history museum and it is quite a sight to see.
When the kids were young, we used to love going down to visit my parents and see the area, walk the streets, and visit the shops. Fourth of July was always particularly fun with the fifes and drums, the fireworks, and the ice cream socials. Historic … and a part of our family’s history.
But this trip last week was just simply not at all the same. My mom is gone, my dad’s not feeling well, and we are seeing the personal and business suffering from the pandemic. I had to work from home the entire time in days that were blocked up from sunrise to sunset with little time to really visit. The trip was like going back in time to another time in our own lives that was just, well, so much happier. Now it’s another place and time there.
That’s ok though … that’s life. There are other parts of life that are extraordinarily happy so it’s all good. It’s the natural evolution of life. I do cherish the memories of those days, however. So this week’s song for #MusicMonday is from The Colonial Williamsburg Fifes and Drums in salute to another place and time.
“Memories, light the corners of my mind. Misty water-colored memories of the way we were.”
Have a great week. What’s your experience? JIM
