Ray-Ban Sunglasses - "Top Gun: Maverick"
Round two …
This past US holiday weekend brought the immense box office success of Tom Cruise’s sequel to his mega-hit “Top Gun.” Massive. And a signal that perhaps we are approaching some sort of a post-pandemic world as we saw people return to movie theaters for a dose of pop culture entertainment. Escapism, perhaps.
The movie not only brought back ticket and popcorn sales, but also sales of sunglasses. Ray-Ban sunglasses to be specific … made immensely popular by the original movie from the 1980’s. In fact so much so that the movie and Tom Cruise are credited with saving the brand at that time. And now it looks like both are doing it again, decades later with this movie product placement causing a resurgence in the sunglasses’ popularity. Before it was the Wayfarer model and this time is the Aviator Classic model.
Very cool.
My what a little product placement can do! This is a case study in product placement, both then and now. And who says the sequels are never as good as the original?!?
