Labor Day #MusicMonday
I know that today is technically Tuesday, but it’s the first work day here in the U.S. after the Labor Day weekend. And since the Labor Day holiday in the U.S. is meant to celebrate and honor those who contribute to working society, I thought I’d make today a #MusicMonday tribute to the workers in the world.
A site called SocialTalent actually published a list of the most iconic songs about work. Click here to review the list that includes plenty a classic.
My personal fave (and if you know me then you know) is “She Works Hard for the Money” from Donna Summer back in 1983. At the time, Donna was the first black woman to go on rotation with her video on MTV. The song was a summer-time smash, as was the video.
Of course if you’ve ever heard Donna sing live, then you know it’s oh so much even better.
Of course there are many other amazing songs about work that deserve a mention. Like “Working for the Weekend” from Loverboy, “Manic Monday” from The Bangles, and of course “9 to 5” from Dolly Parton.
When Kelly Clarkson debuted her new talk show, she used “9 to 5” as a launch vehicle to kick off her “Kellyoke” segments where she covers classic songs. Here she is singing it with the GOAT.
So back to the holiday: here’s to all the folks who work tirelessly to take care of their lives, their families, their loved ones, their friends, their pets, and themselves … whomever they care for. Working to make life, well, work. It’s a non-stop job, it’s exhausting, it can be frustrating at times, and hopefully it’s rewarding on some level for each and every one. However “rewarding” plays out for you.
Here’s to you … in honor of you.
What’s your experience? JIM
